When evening falls so hard…

Saturday, April 29th, 2006 by Naiah

I feel as if I’ve just awoken from a bad dream. Well, not really. Not unless a nightmare can last almost three weeks. Had you asked me a month ago, I would have said that I used to have some problems with depression, a few years ago. Alas, it’s a lot less ‘used to’ as of the last three weeks. Chicken fences

Thursday, April 27th, 2006 by Starfoxy

Some people have called my parent’s house a ‘farm.’ I don’t think it counts as a farm, because we didn’t really grow anything. Yeah we took care of a lot of animals, and had more land than most(nearly 2 acres!), but it wasn’t a farm. We had two horses, two dogs, two cats, two lovebirds, my sister had some fish, and I had a frog. The animal we had the most of though, was chickens. It was my job, for as long as I can remember to take care of the chickens. I would throw some feed around every afternoon, and hunt for their eggs, (we had free range chickens before it was chic :p). I was different than my siblings though, I liked the chickens, I liked them a lot. I named them all and could tell them apart even though they all looked the same. The weirdest thing though, was I managed to tame the chickens. Read the rest of this entry »

Hyper-parenting

Thursday, April 27th, 2006 by Jen

Good old Oprah. Always bringing up something you never knew existed. One day there was an Oprah show on what was refered to as “over-parenting” or “hyper-parenting”. The show began by introducing several moms who had a relatively rigorous schedule for their children each day and had signed them up for a plethora of activities all deemed to be enriching. The discussion stemmed on whether or not all these activities, and more importantly how these activities were presented, were affecting the children and their self esteem. For example, one lady had her eight year old daughter seriously pursuing violin, piano, ballet, martial arts, soccer, and harp. Read the rest of this entry »

To Dress Formally or Not, That is the Question

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006 by RoAnn

There is an immensely entertaining post by Emily S over at Feminist Mormon Housewives, dealing with what constitutes proper Sunday church attire: Sunday Best? But as I was reading the comments, I couldn’t help but ponder the following question:

Why it is that the desire to dress formally for church has remained strong in countries where most members are extremely poor and uneducated, while in the U.S., many members (women in particular) seem to dress more and more casually? Read the rest of this entry »

When Your Prayers Seem Unanswered,
by S. Michael Wilcox

Monday, April 24th, 2006 by Michelle

I have read some posts on prayer lately, and heard some amazing talks on the subject, and while it was on my brain, I thought I would share again this review because the insights in this book meant so much to me. The book really helped me gain a greater appreciation for how prayer works, and how a spiritual perspective can help me through hard times. I hope it might be helpful to someone else as well.

When Your Prayers Seem UnansweredYou know how it feels when you hear or read something that is exactly what you needed at that point in your life. That’s what S. Michael Wilcox’s talk-made-into-a-book, entitled When Your Prayers Seem Unanswered, was for me. One of my dear friends had heard Brother Wilcox speak, and she shared some insights she had received in a Relief Society lesson. Shortly thereafter, I found a talk he had given where he discussed the concept of unanswered prayers. And my life was changed. Forever. Read the rest of this entry »

“I cannot live without books.”

Monday, April 24th, 2006 by Téa

Thomas Jefferson and I have more in common than hair color, you know.

Once upon three weeks ago, after commenting on used book stores being another option to build a larger LDS themed library** Proud Daughter of Eve asked

What books do you have in your library and which ones are your “must haves?”

Gratifying

Friday, April 21st, 2006 by Starfoxy

Nils has started being much more mobile and coordinated. He can pull himself up and stand at the couch, and cruise a little bit too. With this increased coordination comes an increased incidence of pain. He falls over, and pinches his fingers, bonks his head and all sorts of other things. I recognize his “I’m hurt!” cry and go to comfort him. I really like being able to comfort him. Read the rest of this entry »

“orthodoxy”

Thursday, April 20th, 2006 by Naiah

Miss Sarah, over at “sketching of thoughts” has an awesome post up on the relative merits of orthodoxy in light of progressive academia. You need to check this out.

All around the mulberry bush…

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006 by Starfoxy

I am the youngest of six kids. And I can count on two hands the number of baby-sitting jobs I ever had (for some reason people never asked me to baby-sit). So here I am, with a 9 month old baby and absolutely no idea how to play with him. I know how to take care of him, but I have no idea what songs to sing to him, hand games to play, and what sorts of things might be fun to him.

So I’m asking all of the expert baby players out there what are fun things to do with my baby?

[Developmentally he’s starting to feed himself regularly (without a spoon). He’s a master crawler, and is working on cruising the furniture. He’s also grabby-grabby-grabby!]

Oh Say, Where is Truth?

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006 by RoAnn

While traveling across country recently, I was engrossed in a highly-acclaimed biography of one of the prophets of this dispensation, which was written by a believing, committed member of the LDS Church. As the author began referring to the accounts of certain incidents, however, I became at first uncomfortable, and finally very disturbed. Read the rest of this entry »
