Wow, another new voice!

Monday, May 15th, 2006 by Naiah

Ready for her first foray into blogging, and making her debut here on APoF is Michelle. [Insert applause, whistles, and general sounds of rejoicing here.] You may have seen her strong, faithful comments (left under the monicker “mullingandmusing”) on a couple of sites already. We’re looking forward to seeing what Michelle will be mulling and musing over in her writings on here. Welcome, Michelle!

Under the Motherly Influence

Sunday, May 14th, 2006 by Téa

For Mother’s Day my husband typed up some of the things our children love about me and presented it with the breakfast they prepared. Sweet memories combined with the delightful way our children express themselves–all the makings of happy tears.

I set it down to start nibbling on my toast, and my oldest grabbed the paper to read to his younger sister. He read his part out loud, but before he started the next one he said: “This is Emma’s post about Mommy, your post is at the bottom.”

I laughed, amused & amazed, reflecting on the impressions I’ve made such a short time, wondering what the future will bring. It’s true what they say about the hands that rock the cradle & type the blogs…

Hands of Healing

Friday, May 12th, 2006 by Naiah

I think to date this is one of the hardest posts for me to write. How do I explain who I am and how I function is this world? I live in Utah with my husband of nearly 18 years and our 4 children. For 13 of those years I worked as a RN on the graveyard shift sacrificing sleep so my children would have a parent home with them instead of going to day care. It was difficult and now with two little ones in the home I wonder “how did I do it?” I must have been crazy.

All things that pertain unto the Kingdom of God

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006 by Starfoxy

Starting today there will be scripture themed post every Wednesday here at PoF. I’m kicking if off today with a few thoughts on D&C 88:78-80.
In seventh grade I remember having a conversation on a school trip. I was sharing a hotel room with three girls who were all my friends. One was an Evangelical Christian, one was Catholic, one was an Athiest, and I was (and still am!) LDS. The conversation was about, of all things, evolution. I don’t remember exactly how it came up, but all three of my friends were shocked to learn that I didn’t completely discount evolution. I distinctly remember my athiest friend asking “But how? Science and religion are complete opposites.” My response was “I believe God works through science to create his miracles.” I went on to explain that He is God because his knowledge is perfect. His power and control over the universe comes from his knowledge of how to make it work. Our knowledge is small and imperfect so compared to us God is infinitely more powerful. I also read them D&C 93:36 “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth.”

This post isn’t about evolution, or even about how science and religion are highly compatible. It is instead about intelligence. Read the rest of this entry »

Jesus is My Co-Pilot

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006 by Starfoxy

I know we’ve all seen them. They’re everywhere. Sometimes they’re witty, somtimes they’re rude, they’re often political, or just nonsensical. You could call them bumper stickers, or decals, or “car jewelry” or whatever you want. They’re a form of self-expression that is specially suited to the car-centric American public. Everyone has their own personal tastes, and there is no accounting for tastes. For example I have a TROGDOR the BURNINATOR static cling on my rear window. Though I love Calvin and Hobbes, I find the Calvin Peeing on [insert icon here] to be lame and stupid (as an aside Bill Watterson has never sold the rights to his strip for marketing purposes, so *any* C&H merchandise is a violation of copyright).

My honest question for you folks is, what about things like this. In fact there is a wide assortment of merchandise that just doesn’t sit well with me. I know I’m not alone in this discomfort. My sister told me about one of her missionary companions who had the moxie to rip offending “Jesus” bumper stickers off of cars in parking lots. Her reasoning was that it was taking the name of God in vain, and could be considered to be a ‘graven image.’ As far as I know damaging cars is vandalism, but was her reasoning behind her actions sound? What’s your personality type?

Sunday, May 7th, 2006 by Jen

As you may know, the Meyers/Briggs test has been at the forefront of personality tests for quite a while. It’s a very lengthy test and to take the real thing can cost you money unless you’re seeing a career counselor at a University or something similar. Initially inspired by Starfoxy’s “Friends” post a while back, I searched the internet, and I came across this quick knock off version of the Meyers Briggs test that will only take minutes and can entice you to learn more by offering relevant follow up information. Nose to Nose

Friday, May 5th, 2006 by Naiah

A friend of mine has a theory that he insists is true. He says that most married couples have noses that are very similar. His theory is that we are attracted to and marry people with noses similar to our own. Now as I look around, I can’t stop myself from comparing ‘couple noses’. I say my friend’s theory is wrong. He wouldn’t budge and says at least 85% of the couples he compares have similar noses.

Your mission for this post, should you choose to accept it, is to compare couple noses and help me disprove his theory. (It’s not that I have to be right, it’s just that I can’t help having a competitive streak ). So, help me out bloggers!

Anti-depressed Zion

Friday, May 5th, 2006 by Naiah

I was recently out on a date with a wonderful man who has been divorced for several years. He mentioned that almost all of the women he has dated over the years are taking anti-depressent medicine. I also know many men who take similar drugs.

I have often wondered why so many people are so depressed. I don’t know the statistics and wonder if the percentages of depressed people are similar in LDS and non-LDS groups. My question for this post is to ask why LDS people are so depressed? We know the gospel is true, we have blessings, tender mercies, spiritual experiences and miracles shared with us constantly. We should be happy!!! Are we too hard on ourselves? Are our expectations too high? Do we feel to much pressure from society, culture, or ourselves? Maybe depression is due to all of these things, but I wonder if there is a way we can we help each other? It is easy to help someone in need when the need is clearly visable. Depression is not clearly visable and people suffering from it, usually suffer alone. It seems to me that depression is a hidden epidemic. I am not an expert and don’t suffer from depression, but would value your opinions.

Tagline: Lil’ help?

Thursday, May 4th, 2006 by Naiah

You may have noticed that the subtitle/tagline here on APoF has undergone a few changes ranging from “This is where a tagline would be if I were able to think of one” to the one about being “Ostentatiously Faithful Latter-day Saint Women.” Fact is, I can’t think of one because this site isn’t just about me. It isn’t even just about the seven ‘Roxcettes’ writing it. It’s the writers, the readers, the commentors–it’s all of us together. And so, I pose the question to our growing community-at-large: how would you sum us up? What would you put in the tagline?
