Praise to the man who communed with Jehovah!
Jesus annointed that Prophet and Seer
Dedicated to the memory of the Prophet Joseph Smith, John Telford and Susan Easton Black have created a fabulous photographic essay, Joseph Smith: Praise to the Man. Glancing though the pages it is obvious that the photos, pull out quotations, and text all work together to portray Joseph, his times and seasons.
Blessed to open the last dispensation,
ever and ever the keys he will hold

Long shall his blood which was shed by assassins
plead unto heav’n while the earth lauds his fame
Witness through photography places that have significance in Joseph’s life, then read about the people and events that bring a greater appreciation of the images, and see how they all contribute to the bigger picture of Joseph Smith, Jr. Waterfalls, monuments, farms, homes, grave markers, cabins, groves, printing shops, NK Whitney & Co, baptismal sites, valleys, rivers, Nauvoo, liberty jail, temples and so much more–all beautifully captured by John Telford, referencing the events rolling on for Joseph Smith.
Wake up the world for the conflict of justice
Millions shall know “Brother Joseph” again
Susan Easton Black’s narration ties it all together, generously quoting those who were there to send the readers on a journey of their own–to be right there witnessing these events for themselves. Her sources are well chosen and her end notes carefully compiled for any further personal study.
Praise to the Man…Death cannot conquer the hero again
A marvelous way to commemorate 200+ years since his birth, Joseph Smith: Praise to the Man is published by Millennial Press .

So they kept the changed words to the hymn, and didn’t go with the original, huh? (Or are the inserted quotes your doing?)

Ahh, so the book uses the changed words too. Well, that makes sense, given its publication date.
For those who don’t know what we’re talking about, here’s the background. William W. Phelps’ original text for the second verse read:
Long shall his blood, which was shed by assassins,
Stain Illinois while the earth lauds his fame.
The wording was changed for the 1948 hymnal, I believe. (The old wording was in place in the 1909 hymnal and prior editions). I’ve heard various explanations as the rationale for the change. One person suggested that it was to help missionary work in Illinois. Another suggested it was a way of distancing the church from abandoned doctrines like blood atonement. I’m not sure which of those, if either, is correct — but in any case, the old words are kind of fun to know, although they’re not sung anymore.

Trying to increase our Illinois-based traffic, eh Kaimi?
