Very good points, Michelle. I, too, am a fan of the song, "Consider the Lilies," and I just realized that whenever I listen to the Tabernacle choir singing it, I definitely do apply it to myself. It helps me relax a bit about my temporal concerns, be more grateful for the many "tender mercies" of the Lord which I receive daily, and remember that I do know that the Lord's promises are sure.

I also agree that although ideas from scholars about the original context of a particular scripture might be interesting and meaningful, it is in likening the scriptures to ourselves that we can often receive personal revelation that God wishes us to have in a particular instance.

Not that we wrest a scripture to fit our agenda, but that we open ourselves to a spiritual impression which was initially prompted by our reading of that scripture.

Are you a Roxcette? Is that a last name or a nickname, I was thinking of dancers. :)

Now I've got that song running through my mind with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Starfoxy, I appreciate your insights a lot! I am a fan of the song, "Consider the Lilies" but, even still, I have let RoAnn's point that the scripture was directed to the Apostles perhaps keep me from really pondering the scripture. There is much to be gained from likening the scriptures to ourselves, even if the original context might not completely be relevant to us. Thank you for helping me remember that meta-lesson. And thank you for your beautiful insights. I especially like "It’s about trusting the Lord to do what He says He’s going to do." That is something that really is applicable in nearly every area of my life. He makes so many promises covering so many elements of life. The question is, do I trust in those promises?

I really like your thoughts on this, Starfoxy. Perhaps I see it applying to me right now as "secondary thought." I also like the idea of trusting that if I follow the direction of the Brethren in terms of temporal preparation, I can trust that the Lord will provide whatever else He deems necessary in my times of trouble.

One explanation I have heard for that scripture is that the specific counsel Christ gave was directed to his apostles. It used to apply to full-time missionaries in this dispensation, when they went out without money, and relied upon the charity of those they met. The world has changed, and now missionaries have support funds; but they don't have to work while serving, and thus they don't need to be preoccupied with obtaining food and clothing.
