BYU Education Week
I have to say that I am one of those people who absolutely dislikes summer. I honestly have a hard time finding anything good about the summer heat. I don’t like to go out, don’t like to go to family reunions, and get sick most of the time. My husband laughs at me because I can tell him when the temperature hits 80 degrees. You would think after all these years of living in a place with hot summers that I would be used to it. There is one thing I do look forward to when summer comes–BYU Education week. When I can go, I go.
This week, the course descriptions came in the mail, and I wish whole-heartedly that I could go. With two little children and kids starting school it is pretty much impossible for me to go. Sometimes my husband will take the week off, but he has a conference that he is going to this year. Still, I like to look through the classes and dream of what I would take and who I would want to hear lecture.
My favorite topics are based on church doctrine. You would think I would take classes on motherhood and self help, but I thrive on the spiritual uplift that I get in those classes that discuss the scriptures. I have found over my years of chemically-induced depression that one week of Education Week would last me 4 to 6 months.
This year the devotional speaker is Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf. The topic is Seek Learning.
I would like to encourage anyone that has the means, the time and ability to go to education week to do so. It is worth the effort
You can get information or sign up at BYU Education Week.

I hate summer, also. I have the reverse seasonal depression disorder. Summer is oppressive and smothery.
I can’t rest in summer.
One day I hope I get to go to one of these conferences. I also look through them, as I do the JC Penney catalog, and dream

And for those that can’t attend, you can do the second best thing: watch it (at least a bit of it) on TV. Some of the upcoming EdWeek will be broadcast over BYU-TV (which you can watch over the internet). Some of the talks from previous years are also available online to watch from your computer or listen to the audio.

I like education week, I’ve only been a couple times though. My mother, Merrilee Boyack, has taught there for the past 10 years, and it’s comical to observe her “groupies” and the die-hards that eat up everything she says. But I also prefer the doctrine-heavy courses, so “fill the canteen”, as it were.

I’ve never been to BYU Education week. I don’t even know that much about it. Thanks for the info.

I am so excited about the possibility of going for a few days this year! Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm about this, Tanya!

Anne it is worth the dream and very much worth attending.
Bradley thank you for the links to the broadcasts, they are generally some of the best lectures at the conference. They also will show lectures from the education week at BYU Idaho.
Connor, that is interesting about your mother. I don’t think I ever attended any of her lectures. Yes the different presenters do get their sets of “groupies”.
JKS, I hope you can look into it more.
Michelle, I hope you can go. I look forward to the next time I can attend. I am hoping next year I will be able to fit in some time.

My mom used to attend BYU Education Week every summer as I was growing up. Her and her girlfriends would all go away for the week to Utah and make a big annual trip out of it. Dad took care of us for the week. She came back happier, more calm, more filled with the Spirit then when she left and we were always glad for her to be home! :} I attended Education Week twice as a young adult… once with my mom and once with some girlfriends of mine and we loved it and ate up all the information that we could! We stayed up for hours late at night talking about spiritual things. When my husband and I were married, we used most of our money on our honeymoon. We went to Hawaii for a week and then we went to Education Week for a week! We attended all the classes for young marrieds and doctrinal classes and all the awesome musical performances! It was such a wonderful week! That was the last time I attended Education Week… 7 years ago and this year it looks like I will be going for a few days with our very own Michelle and I am so excited I can hardly stand it! :}

Stephanie,
That like so much fun. I wish I could join you and Michelle. In a few years maybe!

Tanya,
Maybe we can do that someday!
My mom used to do Education Week, too. I remember her coming home and completely decompressing to my dad about all she learned. It was such a rejuvenating thing for her. I’m looking forward to having a few days of that myself this year. Woo hoo!
