God Cares About Halloween Parties

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006 by Michelle

Or at least He cared about the one I was in charge of.

Ten years ago, I was Activities Chair in my ward. It was one of the more daunting callings I have had. I had no co-chair to help carry the load, and no husband to brainstorm with at home. But I learned that I was not working alone. Read the rest of this entry »

The Symbol of our Faith

Thursday, October 26th, 2006 by Michelle

I finished a book today. It was about symbolism on various temples from early church history. It was a fascinating read.

As I read the last chapter, I was moved by a story, and wanted to share it with you. Read the rest of this entry »

The Little Details

Thursday, October 26th, 2006 by Guest

This poignant piece was submitted by Stephanie, one of our guest writers.

Have we not been reassured about the fall of one sparrow and that the very hairs of our heads are numbered? (see Matt. 10:29–30; D&C 84:80). God is in the details! (Neal A. Maxwell, “Encircled in the Arms of His Love,” Ensign, Nov. 2002, 16)

During a routine obstetric ultrasound I was told that I needed to be induced immediately to give birth to my fifth child, just two weeks shy of my due date. I was not expecting that. My ultrasound revealed too little amniotic fluid and that the baby could be in danger. Because I knew that ultrasound measurements can be unreliable, I requested to talk to my doctor. I finally saw him a few hours later and asked him to repeat the ultrasound. Again the measurements showed too little amniotic fluid.

I knew I was dehydrated and hungry so I asked to be released to go home and eat, drink some water, pack, and see my kids before being induced. I had a strong desire to go home and be with my children and to call my parents. (I usually only called them on Sundays and this was Monday.) Read the rest of this entry »

Winter: A season of adversity

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006 by Guest

This was written by Alli, one of our guest writers.

It seems to me that in the times of my greatest need or frustration I feel like the words I pray to my Heavenly Father are falling from my lips and onto the floor. I know in my heart that I am not really alone during the winter seasons in my life, but it can sometimes feel as though I am. I am grateful, however, to be reminded that I am not alone.

As I left the Missionary Training Center (MTC) to enter the missionary experience, I felt a strong sense of certainty that there was in front of me a vast sea of experiences to be had. I was anxious to share the gospel that I had been taught all of my life. With a renewed sense of urgency and confidence in my ability as a servant of the Lord, I embarked on my journey. Saboteur, by Dean Hughes

Monday, October 23rd, 2006 by Naiah

Saboteur“Do you know what sabotage is?” Simone asked. “Sabot is the name for the shoes we wear out here on the farm–wooden shoes like the ones you two are wearing. During strikes, workers tossed them into the machinery as a way to shut down factories that weren’t fair to them. It took courage to do such a thing, but it was the right thing to do” (p. 178).

In Saboteur, by Dean Hughes, we meet Andy Gledhill, a young Latter-day Saint man serving his country in the second World War who is assigned to the OSS, America’s fledgling military espionage devision, where he is trained as a spy, saboteur, and assasin. Read the rest of this entry »

Getting it Right

Friday, October 20th, 2006 by RoAnn

Mary A. recently wrote a great essay on patience. We must be on the same wavelength, for patience has been on my mind as well. Following are some of my thoughts on the topic.

Sometimes I think that the main reason why we have computers is to help us develop one of the most important virtues for a Latter-day Saint woman: patience. Read the rest of this entry »

On Being of Good Cheer

Thursday, October 19th, 2006 by Guest

This was written by Mary A., one of our guest writers.

On 20 September RoAnn wrote an essay called “Be of Good Cheer.” I found it inspiring and then I found a talk by Elder Maxwell that expounds on that same theme, and I wanted to point it out and to make a few comments of my own.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell gave a talk years ago entitled “Be of Good Cheer.” One might ask, in this day and age, “How does one go about being of good cheer? How is it possible?” Read the rest of this entry »

Isaiah 40-49

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006 by Michelle

My good friend, Debbie, has agreed to let me share her handout from our Gospel Doctrine lesson this past Sunday. The first section was my favorite — see what you can find out about the Savior in the following passages. (I’m hoping we will hear from Debbie again sometime soon. She has taught me a lot and I am anxious for you to be able to learn from and with her, too.) Read the rest of this entry »

Gems from General Conference

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006 by Michelle

Before too much more time passes, I wanted to give us all an opportunity to share what struck us the most from General Conference. Was there a talk in particular that really caught your attention? Was there something that came as an answer to prayer? Was counsel given that motivated you in a specific way? Read the rest of this entry »

“[Our] Walk and Talk”

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006 by Michelle

I love General Conference. I’m always a bit saddened when the spiritual feast comes to an end and the “conference is adjourned for six months.”

However, hasn’t the feast just begun? Read the rest of this entry »
