RoAnn, great quotes! I've been thinking about that book since Naiah reviewed it. Thanks, Adrienne! I agree--attitude can make a big difference.

Nice post! I find that it's better to enjoy life than to simply endure to the end. By remaining largely optimistic, there's less risk of depression when compared to being pessimistic.

In the book Naiah recently reviewed, One Bright Shining Hope: Messages for Women by Gordon B. Hinckley, there are several thoughts on being of good cheer. A couple of examples:

"Cultivate an attitude of happiness. Cultivate a spirit of optimism. Walk with faith, rejoicing in the beauties of nature, in the goodness of those you love, in the testimony which you carry in your heart concerning things divine." p. 49

"I come to you with a plea that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life we try to 'accentuate the positive.' I am asking that we look a little deeper for good, that we still our voices of sarcasm, that we more generously compliment virtue and effort." p. 145

Thanks, T.F. President Hinckley is one who wants us to be of good cheer. I, too, wish my memory was better, but I remember that he talked about it and so did someone else.

In General Conference, maybe a year ago ( I wish my memory was better ), there were at least a couple of talks that issued the same thought, to be positiive in attitude. One of these talks was by President Hinkley as I recall.

Thank you for a well thought out and uplifting piece.

Thank you so much for your comments. I was very moved by Elder Maxwell's talk. I miss him, too, and am very glad we can go back and read many of his talks and books. I like his view of things.

Thanks for this, Mary! I had forgotten about this talk, but I'm sure that many of my thoughts as I composed my recent post were inspired by Elder Maxwell. Having gone through so much pain with his cancer we know that he must have had to rely on Lord to remain cheerful. He has given us so much insight into how to gracefully handle trials and put them into perspective.

I loved this, Mary. And I needed it this week. I especially appreciate his points about having a "deliberate trust in God’s unfolding purposes." I love the perspective of the context of His counsel -- at a time when there would have been many reasons for His apostles to not be of good cheer.

I also sooo appreciate the reminder that we aren't given more than we can bear, even if it feels like we have been! (I fall prey to that mentality at times. This week was one of those times!) This really was such a good reminder for me! Thank you so much!

Can I just say that I miss Elder Maxwell?

Boy, is it hard to be cheerful. Especially if you don't feel cheerful and you are not naturally nice. Or naturally sweet, I should say. It's hard to fake it.

But sometimes all I need is a good shake and this provided it, for the next few minutes anyway. Thanks, Mary.
