I appreciate your insights in this post. We do all need the iron rod. I also appreciated your comment #3 above (and RoAnn's comment #1). We need to thoroughly incorporate the basics into our lives in order to progress. And, yes, we do need the reminders--at least I certainly do!! The other thing that is so critical to realize about "the basics" is that they are the key to understanding "the mysteries." As we embrace and live the basics, the Spirit can fill our hearts and lives and teach us the things that our spirits crave. It's a neverending upward spiral of growth, insights, power and peace that await as we live these basic principles. But I sense that we aren't doing enough of that, but also sense that because we are mortal, we simply need reminders. Every week the Savior asks us to come to the sacrament table for very simple, basic renewal of covenants -- covenants that in their simplicity invite us to remember and give us the opportunity to someday receive all the Father hath! Sad! Part of me wants to keep reading it, but the other part of me realizes I have a bajillion other things to read and study. She said they complained that our leaders always talked about the same things: read the scriptures, pray, etc. Surely we should get the message that those things are absolutely crucial to our salvation, and rejoice in having the Spirit witness to us the truthfulness of those Conference messages every six months. The very fact that those basics are continually stressed means that the Lord wants us to overcome our distractions and truly cling to them!
