Peace
Happy New Year! We at A Prayer of Faith hope your holidays were wonderful, and that 2007 will be a great year for all!
I can never get enough of the doctrine of peace that comes through the good news of the gospel and is woven throughout the scriptures. If there is a New Year’s wish I have for all of us, it’s that we can have peace in our lives, regardless of what is happening in our lives and in the world around us. In that spirit, following is a compilation of some of my favorite scriptures on the topic of peace.
Isaiah 54:10 - For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace…to give you an expected end.
D&C 84:102 - Glory, and honor, and power, and might, Be ascribed to our God; for he is full of mercy, Justice, grace and truth, and peace….
Luke 1:68-79
Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
To perform the mercy [promised] to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
To give light to them that sit in darkness and [in] the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Psalms 29:11 - The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.
Mark 4:37-39
And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
D&C 59:23 - But learn that he who doeth the works of righteousness shall receive his reward, even peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come.
John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Isaiah 53:5 - But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
John 16:33 - These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Romans 15:13 - Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Mosiah 15:18 - And behold, I say unto you, this is not all. For O how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that is the founder of peace, yea, even the Lord, who has redeemed his people; yea, him who has granted salvation unto his people;
Alma 7:27 - And now, may the peace of God rest upon you, and upon your houses and lands, and upon your flocks and herds, and all that you possess, your women and your children, according to your faith and good works, from this time forth and forever….
Alma 58:11 - Yea, and it came to pass that the Lord our God did visit us with assurances that he would deliver us; yea, insomuch that he did speak peace to our souls, and did grant unto us great faith, and did cause us that we should hope for our deliverance in him.
Galatians 5:22 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith….
3 Nephi 22:10 - For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.
D&C 19:23 - Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.
Ezekiel 37:26 - Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
D&C 121:7 - [P]eace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment;
Isaiah 32:17 - And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
2 Cor. 13:11 - Live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
Romans 14:19 - Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Philippians 4:7 - And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ….

“Let not your heart be troubled”
That is one of the dearest scriptures to me, probably because I’m a worrier.

Eric,
I picked the ones that caught my attention.
There ARE more scriptures on peace!
Naiah, we must be alike in some ways, cuz I’m a worrier, too.

Oh, Peace is such a wonderful gift.
I have to share that I felt it again last night, after DH and I had couple prayer. We’re struggling to know which job he should take and where we should move. It’s not a life-threatening or life-shaking decision, but it has been very stressful for ME, and I think my husband really knew that, therefore making our prayer last night directed towards my worries. Jeremiah 29:11 (up there at the top) fit the way I felt perfectly.
Thanks, Michelle, for this post. It’s a good reminder to know that Peace can come at any time we need it…we just have to ask for it.

Reading these scriptures is a great way to start a new year. Thanks for this post, Michelle.
I particularly noticed D&C 19:23, because it contains three keys to obtaining the peace I truly desire: “Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.”
I know that the promises of the Lord are sure. So it seems to me that if I want to have the peace of God in my life, if I have the right attitude and act according to the Lord’s will, I can access that peace even when everything around me may seem WAY too chaotic and uncertain! I am so grateful for that “tender mercy.”

Michelle, you gave me a great list to start our my week. I’ll be reading through these in the morning.

Michelle, thanks for this peaceful post! I can’t seem to get enough scriptural reminders to help me as I seek after peace. Having at least some peace in my life helps me to work on other things–I’m more able to think and reason and figure out what I need to do and to work on!

RoAnn,
It’s been fun to see how different scriptures stand out for different people. I love how the scriptures are the same for all of us, and yet are so personal because the Spirit can highlight those we personally need.
Alison,
I am grateful this could be meaningful for you!
Mary,
I agree…peace is one of my favorite scriptural topics.

I liked what I read about peace in True to the Faith recently:

I looked up Peace in True to the Faith after reading this post and I really liked this part:
“In addition to feeling peace yourself, you can be an influence for peace in your family, your community, and the world. You work for peace when you keep the commandments, give service, care for family members and neighbors, and share the gospel. You work for peace whenever you help relieve the suffering of another.”
Not only can we feel inner peace, but we can work for peace, be an influence for peace. I love it!

Téa,
Thanks so much for sharing that reference. It really adds a great dimension to the whole concept!
