I explained that there would be a town election the next year, but the next important national election would be in two years. He said "ok, that's the one I'll vote in." I gently broke the news that he'd have to be a grownup before he could vote. He said, "I know. I'll be ELEVEN, Mom." He was completely crestfallen when I told him that the legal definition of adult enough to vote is 18, and protested, "I thought you just had to have two numbers!" I took my then 9-year-old with me when I voted in the last election, and he asked when the next one would be. I think you will indeed have your hands full when is is older--unless he is just on a super fast growth track, and will act like a mature adult once he reaches the age of 13!
